Madison’s Dairy Drive Campground for Homeless Faces Closure Amid Funding Shortages: A Reflection on Its Impact and Future

Madison’s Dairy Drive Campground for Homeless to Close Due to Funding Shortages

MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – The city runs a campground on Dairy Drive. The plan is to close it by year’s end. The work stops because the funds are low. The site has helped about 30 homeless people. It began in 2021 as a safe place during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Background of the Campground

The park was made to replace a group of tents set up illegally at Reindahl Park. When residents and local leaders asked for help, the city used an empty lot to build a village of small homes. In the early days, people left from the camp at Reindahl Park and found a safe shelter here. At one time, there were nearly 70 people at Reindahl Park.

Jim O’Keefe, who directs community work for Madison, spoke with concern. He said, "Without new funds, and it does not look like we will get them, we must close the site by the end of the year."

Funding Challenges

The site had money from federal COVID funds. The total cost was $2.5 million. About $1 million paid to start the project. Every month, about $65,000 was spent to keep it running. When the federal funds ended, the city found it hard to keep the place open.

Achievements and Impact

Since opening, the campground has served 97 people. Sixty-two former residents now have permanent homes. Brenda Konkel, who steers the Madison Street Medicine group, said, "We see lives change here. People come with many needs and leave with hope."

The site had hard times before. There were problems with drugs and fights. The situation grew better over time. More help was given at the site. O’Keefe said, "Our onsite support made a big difference for the residents."

Future Considerations

City leaders plan to close the site. Yet, Konkel holds a small hope. She said that extra money from local donors or foundations might let the site stay open. "It is a shame to lose this win. We know it really works," she said.

The city also builds a new shelter at 1902 Bartillon Drive. This new project will serve about 250 men.
