Belgrave South Residents Advocate for Tiny House Policy to Address Housing Challenges
Petition Gains Momentum Among Local Community
A couple in Belgrave South starts a petition to fix housing problems in the Yarra Ranges. They ask for clear rules on Tiny Houses on Wheels (THOWs) and caravans. Evrim Sen and her partner Benny bring the petition to the council meeting on March 25, 2025. Many local residents add their names.
The Couple’s Journey to Affordable Living
Evrim and Benny work as community workers in the area. They live in a caravan on private land and have done so for two and a half years. They chose this home because money is tight. Unstable work and ongoing health issues make buying a house difficult. Evrim explains, "We knew a mortgage was out of reach. Our caravan gives us some security now. But local rules do not support this way of living." Since February 2025, the pair has collected over 650 signatures. The petition asks for a rule on THOWs and a break on orders that force people to leave their caravans.
Advocating for Change
At the meeting, Evrim speaks about better home options. She tells the council that many people in the Yarra Ranges face unstable living conditions every day. She adds that other councils in Victoria work on similar rules. Evrim states, "Other councils act on this matter because they see the need for quick steps. We can set rules that meet the needs of our community and help with money issues."
Council Members Respond
Council members listen with care. Fiona McAllister backs the petition and says, "This matter stays high on our list because of our housing strategy. I want to find out more." Peter Mcilwain and Jeff Marriott also commend Evrim for her clear talk. They note that local councils can play a part in fixing homelessness and setting new housing rules.
Next Steps for the Council
After the talk, the council sends the petition to its officers. The officers will study the petition next. They want to see how other places, such as the Surf Coast Shire, allow more flexible use of caravans and tiny homes on private land. Evrim hopes that the council will craft a rule that helps her family and others who struggle with housing. She says, "This matter protects residents who need a home. It shows our care for this community. We can work together to keep the Yarra Ranges a place where everyone can grow."
